(CNN) — FedEx expects Monday to be the busiest shipping day of the year and in its history.

As people scramble to get Christmas presents sent on time, an estimated 19 million packages will be sent via FedEx Monday, up 10 percent from 2011.

The number is also almost twice the number sent in 2005.

FedEx representatives say online shopping and people mailing holiday packages will bring more than 280-million shipments through the company in the next month.

To handle all that extra volume, FedEx has added 20 thousand seasonal positions.

If you’re waiting until the last minute to ship by ground, FedEx says you’ll have to send your presents by December 17 to ensure they arrive for Christmas.
