WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police say a Kernersville man died after his van ran into a tree Saturday morning in Winston-Salem.

Carl Kenneth Obyrne, 40, was killed in the wreck which police say occurred around 1:55 a.m.

Authorities say the crash happened as he was headed south on U.S. Highway 421 and exited on to the Reidsville Road exit.

Officials say Obyrne lost control of the 1999 Dodge Caravan and slid off the right side shoulder of the roadway. Police say the vehicle then struck a tree.

Authorities say both alcohol and speed appear to be factors based on the preliminary investigation.

The Winston-Salem Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit has assumed the investigation.

Police say Obyrne’s family has been notified. This is the 23rd motor vehicle fatality of 2012.
