Recent surge in Better Business Bureau branded phishing emails

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Better Business Bureau has seen an increase in complaints regarding suspicious BBB emails, using the BBB logo and brand to spread viruses and malware on to unsuspecting users’ computers.

Many users have received emails about a BBB complaint about their business, sometimes even if they’re not business owners or accredited with BBB.

Clicking the link or attachment usually results in some type of malware or virus.

The Council of Better Business Bureaus is aware of this spam campaign using the BBB’s  name, and has been working diligently to identify and stop the source of these phishing emails.

 If you receive a suspicious email that looks like a BBB complaint:
  1. Do not click any of the links or download any attachments contained in the email.
  2. Check the content of the email for any obvious mistakes like misspellings, grammatical errors, or generic greetings. These are usually present in scam emails.
  3. Forward the email to:
  4. Delete the email.
  5. If you’re unsure of the legitimacy of any BBB email you’ve received, call BBB
