SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — The North Carolina Highway Patrol has released the name of a man killed when he wrecked while being chased by police in Southern Pines.

Troopers say 36-year-old William Porter Cochrane III of Carthage was killed when his car ran off U.S. 15-501, hit a tree and an embankment and overturned on Wednesday.

Southern Pines Police Chief John Letteney says an officer had pulled over a driver just before 11 p.m. for erratic driving. Letteney said the driver sped away after stopping in the middle of the road.

Cochrane was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.
