1 dead after major wreck reported on Hwy 18 in Alleghany County

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, N.C. — Officials said one person is dead after a major wreck involving a possible chemical spill Sunday night on Hwy 18 in Alleghany County.

Highway patrol officials said the wreck occurred around 7:30 p.m. in the area of Jane Taylor Mountain near Hummingbird Lane.

Officials said several helicopters took patients to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Others were reportedly taken to Alleghany Memorial Hospital.

Authorities said the patients were undergoing a decontamination process where they were being washed before treated.
