NC mother accused of trying to kill daughter, cat

WILMINGTON, N.C. – A woman was arrested after deputies said she tried to kill her 9-year-old daughter and family cat Friday in Wilmington.

WWAY reported that Jeannie L. Marvel, 49, of Wilmington, was charged with attempted first degree murder and felonious cruelty to animals.

Officials said Marvel was found unresponsive by a family friend at a home, along with her daughter and cat, both of whom appeared to be possibly poisoned.

WWAY reported that Marvel and the child were taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Officials said the child was treated and released into the custody of the North Carolina Division of Social Services. The cat was treated and is under veterinarian care, authorities said.

A motive was not released. Specific details on Marvel’s alleged crime were not provided.

Authorities said Marvel received a $500,000 secured bond and has court planned for Tuesday.
