Firefighters battle blaze in Matthews, 2 injuries reported

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Two people are being treated after officials said a fire broke out at an apartment complex Friday night in Matthews.

WSOC reported that about 60 firefighters responded to the blaze at the Berkshires at Matthews apartments at 1709 Chambers Drive. They reportedly had the situation under control by around 10:20 p.m.

Authorities said the victims were taken Carolinas Medical Center, one with life-threatening and another with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The complex has 23 occupied units and all the families were displaced. The Red Cross is assisting.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
