Man accused of assaulting two people in Rockingham County

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies said they arrested a man for violently assaulting a man and a woman Sunday night at his home in Rockingham County.

Daniel Donovan Courts, 55, of Ruffin, is accused of cutting the woman’s throat with a knife and striking her head with a fireplace poker. Deputies said he also cut the male victim’s arm.

Authorities said the alleged assault occurred around 11 p.m. at the suspect’s residence at 7368 US 29 Business.

Deputies did not give a motive for the crime. The female victim has the same last name as the suspect, but the male victim does not.

Authorities said the victims were taken to the hospital. Current conditions were not released.

Courts was charged with two counts of felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Officials said he was placed in the Rockingham County Jail under a $100,000 secured bond and has court planned for Nov. 15.
