(CNN) — Tom Hanks plays a variety of roles in his upcoming film “Cloud Atlas,” and it seems that he got a little too into one of his characters Friday morning on “Good Morning America.”

The 56-year-old actor was chatting about the adaptation of the acclaimed novel of the same name when he was asked to speak in the accent of one of his characters.

Hanks was game, but he forget to clean up his character’s potty mouth and accidentally said “f*****g” in the middle of his sentence. To be fair, though, he did warn “GMA’s” Elizabeth Vargas ahead of time that “mostly it’s swear words.”

After the f-bomb slip, the actor immediately caught himself and apologized. “Man oh man, I’m sorry, I slipped into a brand of acting,” he said. “I have never done that before, I want to apologize to the kids in America that are watching this right now. And let me say, next time on the show there will be a seven-second delay.”

While Vargas tried to move on, Hanks got in one more joke: “Never give me a handheld mic! I blame the staff.” When he took his apology to Twitter, Hanks added, “For GMA … Oops! In character! Sorry!”
