RALEIGH, N.C. — The campaign for a North Carolina Supreme Court candidate is now on television accusing outside groups of attempting to “buy a seat” through their own TV commercials and billboards.

The ad by Court of Appeals Judge Sam Ervin IV comes as a so-called super PAC named the North Carolina Judicial Coalition has agreed to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on ads backing incumbent Justice Paul Newby

The coalition’s commercial features a banjo player and crooks getting caught by a Newby pickup truck. Ervin’s ad is more solemn, with an image of a statue of blind justice getting covered in falling dollar bills.

The coalition didn’t address the Ervin campaign’s accusation in a written statement but said its goal is to educate the public about Newby’s experience.
