Mother-in-law charged in shooting death of Winston-Salem man

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Police say a Winston-Salem woman is charged in the shooting death of her son-in-law after a domestic dispute that occurred Monday afternoon.  

According to police, Jorge Martinez Jr., 45, died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center after he was shot multiple times in the upper torso. The victim was found shortly before 3:45 p.m. at his home at 2451 Farmbrook Road. 

A preliminary investigation indicated Martinez was shot during an argument with a family member, police said. 

Detectives arrested the victim’s mother-in-law, 63-year-old Emma Jean Brent, in connection with the incident.  Police said the suspect has been living at the victim’s home. 

Brent is charged with voluntary manslaughter.  She was jailed in the Forsyth County Detention Cetner under a $500,000 secured bond. 

The suspect has an initial court hearing slated for Oct. 26.
