PINNACLE, N.C. — The North Carolina Tea Party gathered Saturday in Stokes County, saying that the U.S. must return to its founding principles and defeat President Barack Obama.

The Winston-Salem Journal reported that more than 200 people attended the event at Jomeokee Park.

The speakers said the United States needs to get back to the constitutional founding principles of limited government and liberty.

“It’s not just Islam that’s taking over,” Kevin Shinault, one of the organizers of Saturday’s event, told the crowd. “It’s socialism creeping in.”

He said in a later interview that he believes the United States is a Christian nation, and that under Obama’s presidency, Christianity has taken a back seat.
