Rockingham Co. man accused of severely beating his mother

ROCKINGHAM CO., N.C. — A man accused of severely beating his mother and leaving her outside their home with several lacerations to her face was arrested Monday in Reidsville.

Joseph Woodrow Turner, 46, allegedly beat the 77-year-old woman and repeatedly stomped on her head at their residence at 3780 Vance St. Ext.

Officials said the suspect tried fighting with deputies as he was being arrested. Authorities said none of the arresting deputies were injured.

Deputies said Turner was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflict serious injury, resisting a public officer and interfering with emergency communication.

Officials said the victim was taken to Moses Cone Hospital but did not release a current condition.

Deputies said Turner was placed in the Rockingham County Jail under an $80,000 secured bond and has court planned for Oct. 2.
