CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A 72-year-old man was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in prison Tuesday after pleading guilty to sexually abusing a 7-year-old girl.

The Gaston Gazette reported that Harold Thomas Shytle, of Cleveland County, was arrested in June after the girl told her mother what happened. Prosecutors said he admitted to it and even confessed to abusing other young girls.

The paper reported that the victim’s mother said she was abused on her seventh birthday. An indecent liberties charge was reportedly dismissed as part of a plea arrangement.

“He’s 72 years old,” said Defense Attorney Pete Gilbert, according to the Gazette. “It’s very likely, regardless of the court’s sentence, he will spend the rest of his life in jail.”
