WILMINGTON, N.C. — Bald Head Island ferry passengers will have to pay to carry their bags to the coastal getaway beginning next month.

The StarNews of Wilmington reports that the N.C. Utilities Commission ruled Wednesday that riders carrying baggage in excess of six items will be charged a $5 fee for each additional item beginning Oct. 1. There will also be a $23 charge for “large, heavy or cumbersome items” such as bicycles and anything longer than 7 feet. Oversized items cannot be carried on.

According to the filing, the primary purpose of the change was to address ferry delays. Previously, there was no baggage fee.

The change doesn’t affect passenger fares. Round-trip tickets cost $24.75 for adults and $13.75 for children ages 3-12. Children ages 2 and younger ride free.
