WILMINGTON, N.C. — North Carolina officials say a grand jury has indicted former Brunswick County District Attorney Rex Gore and former assistant district attorney Elaine Kelley.

The indictment returned Monday alleges the two entered into an illegal agreement paying Kelley $14,000 in fraudulent travel expenses. Gore was indicted on conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses. The indictment alleges Kelley falsely claimed travel expenses from 2005 through 2010 for travel between Elizabethtown and Bolivia.

Gore said in a statement that he hired Kelley with the understanding she would be commuting more than 500 miles per week and included a compensation package in her salary. He said the district attorney has broad discretion in compensation and chose a plan limiting Kelley to 125 miles a day for commuting.
