MEBANE, N.C. — Police said a man was shot late Wednesday night in Mebane during an encounter with two break-in suspects at an apartment complex.

Officers were responding to a report of a break-in shortly before 11 p.m. at the Fieldstone Apartments at 1000 Quaker Creek Drive when they found 22-year-old Ron-Tel Vincae Royster of Efland shot and lying on the ground outside the apartments.

Royster was airlifted to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, where police said he was in stable condition as of 11:15 a.m.

Before the shooting, police said there was a struggle in the first-floor breezeway of the 1000 building of the complex.

Police said two unidentified male suspects entered an apartment at the building through a rear bedroom window. The resident walked in on the suspects and was ordered to the ground at gunpoint, police said.

The two suspects then tried leaving the apartment, at which point they encountered Royster and another person in the breezeway, police said.

Police said an altercation took place, during which Royster was shot at least once.

Witnesses told police they heard multiple gunshots before officers arrived.

The suspects, who were not described, were last seen running toward South Third Street.

Police said the investigation is ongoing.  Anyone with information is asked to call police at (919) 563-9031 or Crimestoppers.
