BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Burlington man was arrested early Thursday after police said they found him breaking into a clothing store.

Police said they responded to a report of a trespasser shortly after 12:45 a.m. at the Maxway clothing store at 728 North Church St.

Derrick Franklin Penland, 46, was found a short distance away from the store, police said.

Police said Penland dropped a large amount of clothing on the ground as officers approached him.

The suspect was detained and later charged by investigators with felony breaking-and-entering a business and injury to real property.

Penland was jailed under an $11,000 secured bond.  He has an initial court appearance slated for Thursday afternoon.

Anyone with further information about the break-in is asked to call Crimestoppers or police at (336) 229-3503.
