Woman convicted of hitting nurses, killing 1 in Mecklenburg County
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A woman has been convicted of hitting two nurses with her car in Mecklenburg County, killing one of the victims.
Leah Walton was convicted of involuntary manslaughter Monday. A Mecklenburg County jury will consider a sentence Tuesday. She faces more than four years in prison.
Susan Karabulut was killed and Lisa Mcle was hurt when they were struck on a sidewalk on Aug. 22, 2010.
Prosecutor Gabrielle Macon said Walton was under the influence of a prescription drug for which she did not have a prescription.
Defense attorneys contend Walton was looking for a cigarette when she swerved and hit the women.
