NC police arrest teen in shooting of 13-year-old

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police in Charlotte have arrested a 16-year-old in connection with the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy.

Authorities identified the victim Tuesday as Khalil Malik Cousart, a rising eighth-grader at Ashley Park School in west Charlotte.

The Charlotte Observer reported that it’s at least the fourth shooting death of a teenager in the city this year, with three of them coming in the last five weeks.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said Damien Deon Wright was arrested and charged with murder after Tuesday’s shooting.

Wright has been arrested three times this year. He was arrested on successive days in April for misdemeanor possession of a firearm by a minor and for possession of a firearm with the serial number removed. He was also was arrested in Janary on misdemeanor drug charges.
