WILMINGTON, N.C. — The body of a 13-year-old Rocky Point boy has been recovered from the Cape Fear River.

A helicopter spotted the body of Shandon Tyre Wright on Monday morning in New Hanover County.

Authorities say they think Wright drowned on Saturday when his family lost sight of him as they fished and swam near Carolina Beach. Sheriff’s Sgt. Jerry Brewer says the boy, his parents and a 3-year-old sibling had been swimming just west of the Snow’s Cut Bridge when the younger child became distressed.

As the father pulled that child out, Brewer says the older one went under the water.

Brewer says fishing is great in the piece of the Intracoastal Waterway that connects the river to the Atlantic Ocean, but swimming in the area can be very dangerous.
