Man struck, killed by train in Thomasville identified

THOMASVILLE, N.C. — Authorities on Wednesday identified a man who died after he was struck by a passenger train Tuesday afternoon in Thomasville near the Randolph County line.

Larry Edward Barnes, 65, of Thomasville, was found underneath the Business I-85 overpass after he was struck by the northbound Amtrak train near East Triad Boulevard shortly after 1:15 p.m.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The train’s engineer told police he sounded the horn after spotting Barnes in the middle of the tracks, however Barnes tried crossing in front of the train and was struck, police said. 

The Raleigh-bound train was on its way from Charlotte when the collision occurred, halting its progress for nearly three hours.
