FANCY GAP, Va. — Authorities have discovered human remains at the bottom of a well in Carroll County, Virginia.

Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said his office was informed on Thursday of possible human remains in a well in the Lambsburg community in Fancy Gap.

Authorities began digging at the site on Friday, Gardner said.  The dig continued until Monday, when it ended at a depth of about 50 feet.

Hours were spent excavating the site until investigators were able to determine that the human remains of a single person were located at the bottom of the well, Gardner said.

The remains were retrieved from the well and taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke for identification, Gardner said.

The SBI, Surry County Sheriff’s Office and Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office all took part in the initial investigation, Gardner said.
