Company once called Blackwater sued over new name

MOYOCK, N.C. — The North Carolina-based company formerly known as Blackwater is facing a legal fight over its most recent name.
The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, Va., reported that a Texas sporting goods chain is suing the company, now known as Academi, over the name. Academy Ltd. Sued in U.S. District Court in Houston.

Blackwater changed its name to Xe in 2009 and to Academi last year. The lawsuit says the similarity of the two names will cause irreparable harm to the sporting goods company.

Four former Blackwater guards face manslaughter charges in connection with a 2007 shooting in Baghdad that killed 17 Iraqi civilians The company has settled civil lawsuits arising from the shooting.

A spokesman for the security company based in Moyock says Academi is confident in its position.
