MARTINSVILLE, Va. — A 5-year-old girl from Martinsville was killed Friday when a wooden pole reportedly fell on her while she was playing with other children.

Deputies with the Henry County Sheriff’s Office told The Roanoke Times that the girl was playing outside with several other children when they attempted to move the wooden pole on Lees Ridge Road around 7:45 p.m.

The pole, which had been lying on the ground, became too heavy as the children tried to lift it, deputies said.

When the pole fell, it reportedly struck the girl in the head.

The girl was taken by a family member to Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, where she was pronounced dead, deputies said.

The girl’s name has not been released.

None of the other children were injured, deputies said.

Deputies are still investigating the incident.
