Burlington man arrested in attempted armed robbery

BURLINGTON, N.C. — A Burlington man has turned himself in after police said he tried to rob a woman who had given him a ride. 

Police said Kevin Dontae Ruffin, 32, turned himself in at the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office around 5:45 p.m. Thursday. 

According to police, Ruffin was picked up by a female acquaintance on Maple Avenue around 11 a.m. Wednesday. 

The acquaintance drove the suspect to a nearby Bojangles’ restaurant, after which Ruffin attempted to rob the acquaintance with a handgun. 

The victim then sped into the parking lot of the nearby Hardee’s restaurant, at which point Ruffin jumped from the vehicle and ran toward the Burlington Manufacturer’s Outlet Center. 

Ruffin has been charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, assault by pointing a gun, possession of a firearm by a felon and carrying a concealed weapon. 

The suspect was jailed in Alamance County under a $95,000 secured bond.  He has an initial court appearance slated for Friday afternoon.
