WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Motorists will be detoured next week as Department of Transportation crews begin replacing two bridges on HWY 52 .

The State Department of Transportation will begin work on replacing two bridges that carry HWY 52 over Tobaccoville Road.

The bridges date back to 1962 and will be replaced because engineers believe they no longer meet the needs of today’s drivers.

“By replacing the bridges, NCDOT will improve motorist safety, make travel more efficient and help the local transportation network last longer, “said the NCDOT.

Construction on bridges will begin next week, with construction crews shifting U.S. 52 North traffic onto the temporary bridge and move U.S. 52 South traffic onto the northbound bridge, so crews can replace the U.S. 52 South Bridge first.

Final completion of the new bridges is scheduled for April 2015.
