ELON, N.C. — Elon University plans on buying the Snyder Campus of Elon Homes and Schools for Children near the university’s campus in Elon.

The 20-acre, 5-building property will change owners at the end of August, officials said in an announcement made Friday.

The purchase is the latest in a partnership that began in 1907 when the Christian Orphanage, the forerunner of Elon Homes and Schools for Children, opened near Elon’s campus.

“We are proud to add this property to the Elon University campus and maintain the educational use of this area of our community,” said Leo M. Lambert, Elon University president, in a prepared statement.

Officials said the five buildings purchased include a large central facility formerly known as the Barringer Building and later used for The Elon School, a private high school that opened in 2007.

There is also a residential building, gymnasium, two additional classroom/office buildings and a soccer field, officials said.

Elon officials said they will conduct a planning process over the next year to determine how the facilities and land will be used.
