GREENSBORO, N.C.-- City council members reviewed an economic strategic plan on Monday, acknowledging that much work is to be done on the east-side of Greensboro.

According to the strategic plan, the area has been hit the hardest economically. The council plans to address retail needs, transportation issues and performance in public schools to improve the area.

Katherine McCormick who has lived on Textile Drive for more than 30 years, feels as if east-side Greensboro has been left out. "Sometimes it just don’t seem right," said McCormick."Everything goes over in Friendly Shopping Center and all those places over there and they forget (about us) over on this side."

Harold Lewis, who works in East Greensboro, is unaware of of what's taking place currently to improve the area. "There really is nothing that I see being done out this way that would really bring more businesses and more families to live out this way," said Lewis.

Diane Bellamy-Small, a City Council member, says she sees the urgency for improvements and feels this is the time. “Now is the time we cannot build out in west Greensboro any further," said Bellamy-Small.

"You aren't going to find a whole lot of folks in east Greensboro that perhaps have an American Express card but they're buying. The thing about it is people in east Greensboro are spending as much as 95%-98% of their income to live,” said Bellamy-Small.

"My vision is for us to have a retail center that goes out at East Wendover at the loop where to me that would be the ideal place, to me that doesn't just impact east Greensboro this impacts east Guilford County," said Bellamy Small.
