BURLINGTON, N.C. — A pedestrian died after being struck by a train Friday morning in Burlington.

Burlington police Sgt. Reid Metters said the victim, who was identified as Andrew Donald Gagliardi, 24, of School Street, was walking on the tracks near Park and Gilliam Roads when he was struck by a westbound cargo train around 8:15 a.m.

Gagliardi was pronounced dead at the scene, Metters said.

Metters said an engineer blew the train’s horn when he saw Gagliardi with his back turned on the tracks, but there was no response.

Police have had a section of Park Road between Hunter Street and Gilliam blocked off for several hours.

No other details were immediately available.
