ASHEVILLE, N.C. — An 8-year-old girl has died after being hit by a car in Asheville and police have charged the driver, who was the fiancé of the girl’s mother, with murder.

Police think that Harry Smith Kimmons III, 27, of Candler, deliberately hit Erica Phillips and her mother with the car he was driving Thursday afternoon as they walked along a sidewalk.

The girl died shortly after she arrived at Mission Memorial Hospital.

Police say Kimmons was the fiancé of the girl’s mother, Jennifer Simpson.

Kimmons is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Police say Kimmons had argued with Simpson shortly before she and her daughter were hit. Simpson was in fair condition at the hospital.
