WILKESBORO, N.C. — The wife of former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which will allow the couple to stay in their home.

The Hickory Daily Record reported that Shana Mayfield filed for bankruptcy protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilkesboro on May 9.

Shana and Jeremy Mayfield took out two mortgages on their home in July 2006 from Carolina Farm Credit.

Their home and property were auctioned on April 30, with Carolina Farm Credit being the sole entity to bid on it for $1.725 million. With the bankruptcy filing, Carolina Farm Credit may not get access to the property.

Last November, their 445-acre property and home went into foreclosure after they failed to pay the approximate $2.7 million
they owed to Carolina Farm Credit.
