ALBEMARLE, N.C. — An Albemarle man has been arrested and charged with murder in a fire that killed two people in Stanly County last week.

Brandon Scott Coggins, 27, is accused of setting fire to a mobile home where two people were sleeping.

The fire was reported about 6:30 a.m. Friday in the Palestine community near Albemarle. Firefighters said the home was engulfed in flames when they arrived.

They found the bodies of Earnest Daniel Hopkins, 85, and Thelma Jean Britt, 77, inside.

Investigators have not released a motive.

It was not clear if Coggins has an attorney.
