GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. — Three dogs were killed and two people were treated for smoke inhalation after a house was destroyed in a fire Saturday night.

The fire happened around 11:40 p.m. in the 4500 block of Troxler Farm Court southeast of Greensboro.

Fire officials said four people were in the home at the time of the fire, along with the dogs.

A woman told fire officials that a dog woke her up as the house was full of smoke. She then woke up the other people and got them out of the house.

The home’s occupants tried to get the dogs out, but they couldn’t get to the animals in time, fire officials said.

The home is a total loss, and the fire caused an estimated $170,000 in damage, fire officials said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but fire officials believe it may have started in the kitchen.

Identities of the victims weren’t released.
