GASTONIA, N.C. — Police are looking for a man who posed as a sheriff’s deputy and took more than $300 from a 73-year-old Gastonia woman.

The woman told police a man came to her door and said he was a deputy investigating a crime that included counterfeit bills.

The woman said the suspect came inside and discussed the investigation and asked to check the serial numbers of some of her money.

The woman said he left after examining her money, finding what he said were several fake bills. He said he was going to the bank to check on the distribution of fake bills. She says the envelope he left her was filled with paper.

The woman said she needed the $340 to pay health insurance, electricity and the cable television bill.
