ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — Deputies have apprehended a Madison man who they previously described as being “armed and dangerous.”

Billy Ray Mabe Jr., 43, of Sardis Church Road, was arrested on outstanding warrants for common law robbery and possession of a firearm by a felon.

In an earlier news release, deputies said they were searching for Mabe and that he should be considered “armed and dangerous.”

Deputy Kevin Suthard, spokesman with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office, said the alert was issued after Mabe eluded deputies during an earlier chase.

Suthard said Mabe fled from deputies on an ATV and then escaped on foot after crashing the ATV on Walter Road.

Soon after fleeing the crash, deputies found Mabe hiding inside his mother’s truck on N.C. Highway 135 near the Walmart in Mayodan, Suthard said.

Suthard said Mabe is being interviewed by detectives and additional charges are pending.
