NEW BERN, N.C. — The North Carolina hometown of author Nicholas Sparks is turning the premiere of a movie based on one of his books into a cause for celebration.

The weekend kicks off Friday with a sneak preview of the movie from his book, “The Lucky One.” The screening at New Bern Civic Theatre is by invitation only, but the public is invited to see celebrities arriving on the red carpet.

The theater that barely holds 300 people got about $12,000 in upgrades, all donated by the Nicholas Sparks Foundation.

The foundation is raising money by selling tickets to a celebrity golf tournament, lunch with Sparks, brunch at his home, and a five kilometer fun run with the former Notre Dame track athlete.
