GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Charges have been filed against a driver involved in a deadly accident that claimed the life of a cyclist last week in Summerfield.

Katherine Henriksen Shubert, 38, of Winston-Salem, was thrown from her bicycle when she was hit by an SUV on Brookbank Road around 7:10 p.m. on April 13. The victim was taken to Moses Cone Hospital, where she later died, troopers said.

Kimberly Crews Mann, 33, of Summerfield, was driving the SUV. She was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle after the Guilford County District Attorney's office assumed an investigation.

According to Trooper Greg Ingram, Mann claimed she was blinded by the sun.  She told authorities she never saw Shubert as they both traveled west on Brookbank Road east of Bunch Road, Ingram said.

Kathy Shubert was an avid triathlete and a CPA with RJ Reynolds. Her husband, Bob Shubert, released a statement to FOX8's Brandon Jones regarding his wife's passing.

“The whole family is grief-stricken. Our hearts are broken. We just want these accidents to stop,” Bob Shubert said.
