ROCK HILL, S.C. — A Winthrop University tennis player is accused of assaulting a teammate.

Luka Stanic, 21, was charged by Wintrop police with assault and battery after he allegedly beat another tennis player, knocking him unconscious on March 28.

Police said Stanic gave Rich Meade and another player a ride to a parking lot on the Winthrop campus to catch a bus. Police said Meade and Stanic argued, and Stanic punched Meade several times in the face, knocking him to the ground.

Another player took Meade to the hospital. Stanic turned himself in to authorities.

Police said Stanic is from Boca Raton, Fla., and has an overall 4-14 record this season. A Winthrop spokesman said Stanic is not playing with the team now, but the coach hasn’t said if he will be suspended.
