STATESVILLE, N.C. — An Iredell County couple said a pack of coyotes attacked their Pekingese near a middle school early Tuesday morning.

WSOC-TV reported Barkley was attacked sometime before 6 a.m. The attack happened after the boyfriend of Barkley’s owner, Samantha Thompson, let Barkley outside to run near a greenway. The man was able to rescue Barkley from the attack.

Veterinarians found a puncture wound in two areas. Thompson said vets told her Barkley would have died if the attack lasted 30 seconds longer.

Iredell County Animal Control officials said coyotes are a known problem, but there isn’t a predator to kill the animals.

Things could change soon, however, as the North Carolina Wildlife Commission is holding public hearings on a proposal to allow people to hunt coyotes and wild hogs at night. The plan could be approved as soon as August.
