Study: Fried foods aren’t always that bad
Contrary to every “health tip” you may have heard over the last several years, fried foods may not always be harmful to your health.
According to a new study, the link between regularly eating fried foods and heart attacks is a myth, according to CBS News.
According to the report, research suggests it’s the type of oil used in frying the food that really matters.
Researchers in Spain followed 40,000 people for 14 years and found the amount of oil they consumed made no significant difference in the incidence of heart disease.
So what’s the catch? In Spain, they tend to fry “fresh” in unsaturated olive or sunflower oil. Research suggests people should switch to these healthier oils from saturated fats like butter, lard and palm oil.
Researchers in Spain stressed their findings may not apply to people in other countries.
Despite the report, Dr. Holly Phillips said fried foods still contain more calories and are often loaded with salt. The foods are also linked to obesity and high blood pressure.
However, doctors say if you need a “fried food fix,” people should consider using olive or sunflower oil when frying.
