RICHMOND, Va. — A Richmond resident unearthed an unexpected item while digging in a flower bed.

Police Capt. Paul Kinry told The Richmond Times-Dispatch the resident found a Civil War-era cannonball Thursday night.

Kinry says the bomb squad was called to the home because the cannonball still had a fuse, which could make it unstable.

The bomb squad used a robot to secure the cannonball and took it to another location, where it was detonated.

Kinry said the cannonball was discovered around 7:30 p.m. and weighs 5 to 10 pounds.
