Masonboro Island fire (WECT)

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. — A picture has emerged of what appeared to be a large fire on Masonboro Island on the North Carolina Coast Thursday night.

WECT reported smoke and flames could be seen for miles beyond the uninhabited barrier island between Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach.

Firefighters told dispatchers they would wait until Friday morning to go to the island.

Masonboro Island covers more than 5,600 acres and spans about eight miles. The site can only be reached by boat.

All species that live on the island are considered threatened by the federal government, according to the North Carolina Coastal Reserve.
