Mount Airy grocery store robbed at gunpoint

MOUNT AIRY, N.C. — Police on Friday released surveillance images of a suspect wanted for robbing a grocery store at gunpoint in Mount Airy.

The robbery happened at La Tapatia #3 at 936 West Pine St. shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday.  Police said the unidentified suspect entered the store, pointed a handgun at the clerk, and demanded money from the register.

The suspect ran away with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. He was last seen running through the back parking lot of the N.C. Farm Bureau at 942 West Pine St.

The suspect is described as a young Hispanic male.  He may have a small scar close to his right eye, police said.
