KERNERSVILLE, N.C. — An elderly woman and her dog died in an apartment fire Tuesday morning in Kernersville.

Sue Dorothy Morris, 74, was found dead by firefighters who responded to an alarm at 4114 Abbotts Lake Circle around 8:30 a.m., according to a news release from police.

Firefighters said they found heavy smoke when they arrived and used a thermal imaging camera to locate Morris, who was quickly removed from the apartment.  Both Morris and her dog were pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire was under control within 15 minutes after firefighters arrived.  Officials said it was contained to the single apartment, which suffered heavy damage from the smoke and flames.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
