Police find child’s body in 30-foot hole
Recovery crews in southern New Mexico were working to reach a child’s body at the bottom of a 30-foot-deep hole Sunday.
Authorities believe the child is Samuel Jones, who went missing Saturday, Carlsbad Police Department spokeswoman Lt. Jennifer Moyers said in a statement.
Authorities think the child died when he fell into the hole near his home, CNN affiliate KOAT reported. Fire officials determined that the conditions were “not survivable,” Moyers said.
The hole was about 14 inches wide and 30 feet deep, she said.
It could take a day for mining crews to reach the body safely, state police said.
Crews were preparing to dig a trench from the side of the hole and shore up the sides, KOAT said.
