BELMONT, N.C. — The former mayor of Belmont is one of two people killed in a car wreck caused by a police chase Wednesday night in Belmont.

WSOC reported that Norman Saunders, 42, started fleeing from police after a DWI checkpoint.

He was reportedly driving a black Acura down Interstate 85, trying to run officers over.

Saunders eventually struck a silver AUDI near the corner of Wilkinson Boulevard and Park Street.

Kevin Lofton, 56, the former mayor of Belmont and his friend Donna Jean Deitz, 60, were in the AUDI and were both killed.

Saunders was driving without a license and was recently released from prison, according to police.
