Durham man arrested after boy shoots himself
DURHAM, N.C.— A man was arrested after his 4-year-old son accidentally shot and injured himself earlier this week in Durham.
WTVD reported that Donald Brooks Nichols, 40, was charged with failure to store a firearm to protect a minor under the age of 14.
The boy received a wound to his head after finding the gun Friday. Nichols was charged Tuesday.
The boy’s mother called 911 for what she reportedly thought was a head injury from falling off the counter. Police determined an unsecured gun caused the injury.
The child is at Duke University Medical Center in stable condition, authorities said.
