A man was arrested after police chase that involved two stolen vehicles and a wrecked patrol car Wednesday in Asheboro.

The Asheboro-Courier Tribune reported that William Michael Gilmore, 39, of Asheboro, allegedly stole a 1999 Nissan Quest van from a home on Uwharrie Street around 7:26 a.m.

Police reportedly found him driving the van on East Presnell Street around 8:40 a.m. and tried pulling him over. He allegedly fled the scene and lost the officer on Woodlawn Street.

Another officer allegedly saw him walking on Presnell Street shortly later and started chasing him through the woods.

Gilmore made his way to Clapp’s Convalescent Nursing Home on Mountain Top Drive and allegedly stole a 2011 Ford truck with the keys in the ignition.

He allegedly sideswiped a patrol car and crashed into a tree on Iron Mountain Road.

The paper reported that he jumped out of the stolen truck and tried to run away but was arrested around 9 a.m.

The original stolen van was allegedly found abandoned on Lansdowne Road and returned to its owner. It also had the keys in its ignition when Gilmore allegedly stole it.

Gilmore was charged with four counts of assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, two counts each of larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle and reckless driving to endanger, driving while license revoked, hit and run leaving the scene, injury to real property, resisting a public officer, failure to stop at traffic light, failure to stop at stop sign, and injury to personal property.

He was placed in the Randolph County Jail under a $250,000 secured bond.
