WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Police say an intoxicated driver traveled into an oncoming vehicle’s lane in a deadly wreck Friday night in Winston-Salem.

Fildelmar Ramirez Ponce, 37, was driving a Ford Expedition north in the 2500 block of Cole Road when he crossed the double yellow lines and crashed into an oncoming Ford van around 10:40 p.m., police said in a news release.

Jamie Garcia Alonso, 20, of Woodville Street, the driver of the van, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in critical condition. Police said he died from his injuries on Sunday morning.

Two passengers in the van, 19-year-old Juan Martines Campos and 20-year-old Eliso Felix Francisco, were also taken to the hospital. Police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

Ponce has been charged with felony serious injury by vehicle and driving while impaired, among other traffic offenses, police said. He was jailed under a $30,000 bond.

Police are still investigating the wreck.
